Today marks the beginning of an unusual seven-day challenge for Tasya, as she starts her first full week with her leg completely immobilized inside a rigid, bright green fiberglass cast. Extending from above her knee all the way down to the base of her toes, the cast keeps both her knee and ankle firmly locked in place, leaving her with no possibility of bending her leg.

As the final layers of plaster and resin harden, Tasya gets her first real experience of life with the heavy, completely rigid cast. Her toes remain exposed through the opening at the bottom, and before heading outside, she carefully pulls a white sock with black stripes over her casted foot, using it as a makeshift shoe to protect her toes.

Once outdoors, the real challenge begins. Relying entirely on crutches, Tasya has to hop on her good leg while keeping the immobilized one elevated. Even the simplest activities become exhausting tasks, from crossing the sidewalk and negotiating curbs to making her way toward the car. Every movement requires concentration, balance, and considerable physical effort.

During a break on a shady park bench, she takes a moment to examine her new fiberglass cast, tapping its hard surface with her fingernails and listening to the hollow sound. She also talks about the strange sensation of having her knee and ankle completely immobilized, and the challenges she expects to face over the coming days.

This is only Day One of Tasya’s seven-day cast adventure. With an entire week ahead of her, she'll have to learn to adapt to everyday life with a completely rigid leg, mastering crutches, finding comfortable resting positions, and discovering just how challenging a week of total leg immobilization can be.
